How to Choose a Wedding Reception Venue – Reception Site Tips For Brides-to-Be

Jan 10, 2011

Article By Tarah Jahnig

With engagement season in full swing, brides-to-be across the country are making decisions on every detail of their big day, from ceremony dates to napkin colors. With limited planning time and hundreds of details to consider, choosing a wedding reception venue can seem like an overwhelming task. Thankfully, for brides armed with the right tools, it does not have to be.

With so many things to think about, some couples rush into choosing a reception site without considering all of the details. Determine what your needs are first, and find a venue that will work with you to create your vision.

Before signing a contract, consider the following:

The Guest List: Some couples mistakenly pick a venue without considering how many people they plan to invite. Nail down a guest list tally, and then choose a venue with appropriate accommodations – not the other way around.

The Budget: A wedding reception often consumes more than half of the bride’s total budget (including catering and decorations). Consider potential fees for the room rental, catering, bar service, setup and teardown, and chair or linen rental. Also be sure to ask about hidden fees, such as corking or cake-cutting. These are details many couples do not think to ask about, but are surprised by on their wedding day.

The Convenience: To cut expenses, consider a location that offers full-service wedding reception facilities, where basics like tables, chairs and linens are provided in the rental fee. A hotel with banquet facilities and room accommodations also reduces transportation headaches for out-of-town guests.

The Catering: Determine the type of food you plan to serve. Whether you envision a full meal, or just hors d’oevres or a dessert bar, consider whether the venue has in-house catering to accommodate your requests. If not, be sure to ask if the venue allows guests to use an outside caterer for a meal or dessert

The Decor: It might be difficult to picture how an empty reception site can be transformed for your wedding day. Ask to see photos from other wedding receptions held there, and find out what types of decorations are allowed.

Most importantly, choose a reception venue where you and your guests will receive excellent service. No bride-to-be wants to be stuck coordinating details at the last minute, and picking the right vendor ensures you will be able to kick back and celebrate with friends and family on the big day.

Follow Up on Patti and Phil’s Story….The Wish Upon a Wedding Couple

Dec 14, 2010

We recently shared a wonderful story with you about Patti Furrow and Phil Sedgwick- a Portland Oregon couple facing unimaginable obstacles who deserved the wedding of their dreams.   Patty picked up the phone one day to search for a reception venue- and she ended up speaking with one of our employees who connected them to the Portland, Oregon Chapter of Wish Upon a Wedding.

Wish Upon a Wedding is the world’s first nonprofit wish granting organization providing weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illness and serious life-altering circumstances, regardless of sexual orientation. They are devoted to helping couples in dire situations who do not have the energy, time, money, or resources needed to plan their wedding. This organization takes care of all the details, and offers couples a chance to relax and enjoy a very special day while surrounded by the love of their closest family and friends.

We are honored to know of this couple and this wonderful organization.   Thanks to Wish Upon a Wedding, Patti and Phil were married on November 12, 2010 and they are Portland’s first Wedding Wish Recipients!  See their story below…..

Portland Couple to Receive Wedding of Their Dreams from Wish Upon a Wedding

Oct 27, 2010

One of the benefits of being in the hospitality industry is getting to know so many couples and hearing their story.  Our Group Sales and Catering Manager, Amber Templeton, brought this very special story to our attention and wanted to share with you.

Patti Furrow and Phil Sedgwick are a Portland, Oregon couple whose 12 year relationship has been tested beyond belief. The couple has faced numerous challenges that includes a cancer diagnosis for Patty, a cancer diagnosis for Phil’s mother, job losses for both, chemotherapy, and overwhelming hospital bills.

Despite these circumstances, Phil proposed to Patty on Valentines Day this year- and the couple became engaged after a 12 years together.

Patty contacted our hotel looking for space for her reception and spoke with Amber.  Her original wedding date was set for 10/10/10. Once they began chatting about the space here, Patti informed Amber of the reason for her quick wedding and shared her story.

Little did Patty know she was speaking with the Vice President on the board for the Portland chapter Wish Upon a Wedding, a nonprofit wish granting organization providing weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illness and serious life-altering circumstances.

“It was at that moment that I knew the ‘planets had aligned’ and that she was meant to call me that day.” says Amber. “I told her about Wish Upon a Wedding, we went through the process and here we are, about to provide a very deserving family with the wedding of her dreams.”

It is with great pleasure to tell you that Patti and Phil will be married on November 12, 2010 and they are Portland’s first Wedding Wish Recipients.  To learn more about this wonderful couple, read their story: Cancer Takes a Backseat to Love For Two Racecar Junkies in Portland, Oregon
